Romantic things to do in the Lake District
Once you're booked in for a stay at Windermere's Howbeck Guest House, you're already well on your way to enjoying a luxurious romantic break in the Lake District. There are few British destinations more romantic, and it is a region that offers so many special things to do that will create lasting memories of your trip.Champagne balloon flights
If you fancy organising a truly memorable romantic date, splash out on a champagne balloon flight over the Lake District for a birds' eye view of the spectacular scenery. It's the perfect way to mark any special event - whether it's an anniversary, a birthday, or even a marriage proposal - gaining a fresh perspective on the dramatic landscapes of Windermere and the surrounding fells.Windermere walks and picnics on the shore
Walks around Windermere are amongst the most popular in the whoe of the Lake District, and justifiably so. Even during the summer when tourists flock to the lake you can find hidden trails and quiet routes to enjoy a romantic stroll, and the scenery is undeniably beautiful. Pack up an indulgent picnic and settle down in a quiet spot on the lake shore to enjoy lunch with a view.Michelin Star dining
The Lake District boasts some of the best Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK, and the Howbeck Guest Houses exclusive alliance with Holbeck Ghyll has proved very popular with our guests. It's easy to see why: first you'll enjoy a complimentary glass of bubbly on arrival, followed by a delicious Michelin Star lunch or dinner in the restaurant - which offers picture-perfect views over Lake Windermere and the fells beyond.Boat cruises on Windermere
Head out onto the lake for a relaxing cruise and changing views of the surrounding mountain scenery, wooded islands and secluded bays. You can arrange a whole day out, combining a cruise on the lake with stops at some of the famous lakeside attractions, such as the Lakes Aquarium or Lakeland Motor Museum- or head out for a romantic sunset cruise in the early evening.Steam train rides
At the southern end of Windermere, in the picturesque Leven Valley, you can hop on a steam train to ride the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway for three and a half miles to Haverthwaite Station, along the pretty banks of the River Leven. Alternatively, head to the Cumbrian coast where you can climb aboard the historic Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway for a romantic seven-mile journey from Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park, to 'Boot Station' at Dalegarth - where you'll find some wonderful, scenic walks around the Scafell Range.Horse riding around Windermere
There are dozens of horse riding and trekking centres near Windermere offering rides out into the countryside for all abilities, and it's a wonderful way to experience the region and get closer to nature -- even for couples who have never ridden a horse before.
If you would like further information about any of these ideas, please come and talk to us at reception during your stay and we will be very happy to help.
